Demi-pointes are much more structured than a soft ballet shoe, however they are not suitable for dance en pointe.
Dancers wear demi-pointes to become familiar with the feel of a hard "blocked" shoe (i.e. pointe shoes), and also to strengthen their feet.
Advanced students tend to wear demi-pointes instead of flat ballet shoes.
